Difference between ERW Stainless steel pipe and Seamless steel pipe

Date : 2018-10-18

Seamless Steel Pipe is manufactured from a solid round steel ‘billet’ which is heated and strained over a form until the steel is molded into a hollow tube. Billets are obtained both from domestic suppliers and from abroad.

To Manufacture ERW Stainless Steel Pipes HR Coils are needed. Major Domestic suppliers of these HR Coils are SAIL, Essar, JSW, Lloyds etc.

What is the Difference Between ERW Stainless Steel Pipes and Seamless Steel Pipes?

Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) pipe is made by rolling metal and then welding it longitudinally over its length. Seamless pipe is made by extruding the metal to the required length; therefore ERW pipe have a welded joint in its cross-section, while the seamless pipe does not have any joint in its cross-section throughout its length.

In the Seamless pipe, there is no welding and is made from solid round billets. The seamless pipe is achieved to dimensional and wall thickness specifications in sizes from 1/8 inch to 26 inch OD. Suitable for High-pressure applications such as Hydrocarbon Industries & Refineries, Oil & Gas Exploration & Drilling, Oil & Gas Transportation, and Air and Hydraulic cylinders, Bearings, Boilers, Automobiles etc.

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipes are welded longitudinally, made from Coil and can be manufactured up to 24” OD. ERW pipe cold formed from a ribbon of steel pulled into a series of rollers and formed into a tube which is welded through an electric charge. It is mainly used for low/ medium pressure purposes such as transportation of water/oil. Kirtan Metals is one of the leading ERW Stainless Steel Pipes Manufacturer and exporter from Bangalore. Common dimensions for ERW Steel Pipe range from 2 3/8 inch OD to 24 inch OD in a variety of lengths to over 100 feet. Surface coatings are available in bare and coated formats and processing can be managed on site to customer specifications.

What Technologies are used to make Seamless & ERW Pipes?

Technologies for Making of Seamless & ERW Pipes “CPE” Technology” used for Seamless Pipes & Tubes Making up to 7-inches OD is the world-renowned Technology. “Plug Mill” Technology used for Higher Dia. Seamless Pipes & Tubes Making from 7-inches to 14-inches, is the most reliable technology, in higher dia. Segment. High-frequency Induction Welding Technology is used for ERW Pipes &Tubes up to 21-inches.

How to Recognize Seamless or ERW Stainless Steel pipes?
To recognize that a pipe supplied is seamless or ERW, Simply view the stencil on the side of the pipe

If it is ASTM A53, Type S means seamless steel pipe.
Type F is furnace but welded,
Type E is Electrical resist welded.
That\'s how. It is the easiest way to identify whether the pipe is seamless or ERW.

In short, Seamless is sold on an old myth that it does not have flaws but that welded has an inherent flaw throughout the length of each tube, as stated above. Intuitively this idea is easily acquired by purchasers and designers with limited experience with the various products. Each product form and production method has its own internal problems and potential defects.

Buyers must become accustomed to what those problems and defects are, and how they might affect particular applications. Then they can make an acquainted decision based on facts, rather than myth.
