Disabling the saltwater generator is the first step in turning a saltwater pool into chlorine. After draining some water to reduce the amount of salt, replenish with fresh water. Verify the pH and alkalinity of the water by testing and balancing its chemistry. Incorporate a shock treatment with chlorine and keep levels in line with manufacturer recommendations. For a smooth transition to a chlorine-based pool system, periodically check and adjust chemical levels as necessary.
