The cancer prevalence in India has almost doubled throughout the last two and a half decades and this pattern are likely to increase in the future due to several factors, including generational (mainly shift in the age structure of the population) and epidemiological transformation (from communicable to non-communicable), and increased case detection.

However, according to recent estimates of incidence and mortality, more than a million new cases of cancer were registered in India that contributed to more than 700,000 deaths in 2018 alone. Although many oncologists are still worried about the incidence of cancer cases in the world, the varying expense of cancer treatment has contributed to the apprehension of public health experts. The latest 75th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in July 2017-June 2018 shows disturbing images of cancer treatment in India.

Price of cancer care in India

The care costs in India range between 2 lakh rupees and 6 lakhs based on the point at which cancer was diagnosed and the type of cancer. Chemotherapy costs also range between 40,000 rupees and 2 lakh per cycle, and radiation therapy costs between 2.5 lakh rupees and 6 lakh rupees.

The person will be expected to remain in the hospital for five to eight days during occasional radiation treatments, depending on the severity of the situation. It takes up to 6 months to finish the counseling and reconstruction. Since surgery and radiation therapy care are very draining, patients in India choose the therapy to be taken, although chemotherapy may be performed in their own country.

Screening services cost

Screening services for cancers such as breast, cervix, and colon have undoubtedly increased their overall survival.

However, typically, just after cancer has progressed physicians, people approach an oncologist, making care more difficult and recovery less possible. \"In India, 70% of advanced cancers are diagnosed. Voluntary screening, also among qualified people, is abysmally poor.

The genetic examination has allowed the availability of selective therapies even more successful as a result of technical innovation.

For instance, Rs 5-6 lakh, including testing, surgery, and radiotherapy, will cost an average of six cycles of chemotherapy for a private practitioner, but for targeted therapy, it could be costly for six cycles to Rs 20 lakh.

Treatment for out-of-pocket costs

High out-of-pocket prices (OOP) are the worst parts of cancer treatment in India (OOP). OOPs, are characterized as direct payments to healthcare providers by individuals during service usage. It does not cover prepaid health care programs such as taxes or specific insurance premiums or contributions and, if possible, net reimbursements made to the payer. In 2017-18, close to 93 percent of all cancer treatment costs (Rs 1.08.659 out of Rs 1.16.218) is met by the OOP. The smart trend shows that OOP, led by Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh in Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, and Assam met all cancer expenses (99 percent). Haryana (76%), Jharkhand (78%), Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha have been found to have the lowest OOP spending on cancer management (85 percent).
