Working on West Side Story, Steven Spielberg Makes the Camera Dance

The latest film by the great director Steven Spielberg, West Side Story, is now showing in Indonesian cinemas. several journalists from other countries, got the opportunity to chat with the legendary filmmaker online recently.

In this moment, he shares his thoughts on West Side Story, which is an adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical of the same name.

Although this latest work is an adaptation, Steven Spielberg ensures that there is an imprint of himself in the film he directed.

"All directors leave an imprint on everything they direct. Be it miniseries, series, or feature films, FTV, or whatever. And this happens through a process," said the three Oscar winner.

Every time you make a decision

This process, said Steven Spielberg, does not occur intentionally, but from the subconscious. This happened in many aspects, even from script development and cast selection.

"Every time we make a decision, it will leave a stamp on the work," he explains.

Want the camera to join in the dance

As for West Side Story itself, which is a musical film, from the start it had one realization.

"As a filmmaker, I want the camera to be a dancer, performer, singer. I don't want to make a film against the stage," he said.

She added, "I wanted the camera to be in the dance, in the room, circling the people there. The camera had to be more than just an observer. I wanted it to be an active participant."
