Tower Packing: Advanced Technology Based on Industrial Products
Technology
has grown more and more advanced as time goes on, meaning industrial products
are becoming increasingly better. Facilities are relying heavily on new systems
to improve the air quality they are putting out. “Mass transfer” is a term that
gets thrown around quite frequently. It often refers to the transfer of a
chemical from one phase to another. In most systems, this involves a gas
compound turning into a liquid.
Tower packing is where the two phases can meet and greatly improve the mass transfer
that’s occurring. This article will go more in-depth on the tower packing
system, the types of tower packing, and how they work.
Tower
Packing Types
There
are a few different types of tower packing that are available. The most common
type of system is called dumped packing. Dumped packing involves a large mass
of solid shapes being dumped into a cylinder column. This provides a greater
surface area so that more gas and liquid can make contact inside of the
scrubber.
Another
type of tower packing is structured packing. It is relatively similar to dumped
packing except that there are a series of stages used inside a vertical tower.
This again provides the largest amount of surface area possible for the gas and
liquid phases to contact each other.
Kimre’s
own KON-TANE®️ Scrubber and Tower Packing is a structured packing mechanism. It
was designed to prevent liquid holdup, limit energy use, and produce a
low-pressure drop. The inside looks almost like a ladder with the multiple
layered pads that are several feet deep. The material used is meant to be
flexible enough that it can easily fit through a manhole cover and conform to
the exact shape needed.
Other
than a cross-flow system, the semi-cross flow packed tower scrubber is the main
system in which the KON-TANE®️ Scrubber and Tower Packing work best. This is
because these scrubbers will combine spray, as well as packed bed parts inside
a horizontal vessel. The maximum separation will begin to occur between the
mist particles, soluble gases, and other matter inside the vessel.
