The lighting system of a motor vehicle consists of lighting and signaling devices mounted or integrated to the front, rear, sides, and in some cases the top of a motor vehicle. This lights the roadway for the driver and increases the visibility of the vehicle, allowing other drivers and pedestrians to see a vehicle’s presence, position, size, the direction of travel, and the driver’s intentions regarding direction and speed of travel. Emergency vehicles usually carry distinctive lighting equipment to warn drivers and indicate the priority of movement in traffic. 

Lights can take any car from 0 to 100 really quick, and good. However, these lights aren’t something simple. A single look at a car’s headlight can change the overall perception of the car. Moreover, it’s not just about the practical use but it gives the car a character, a demeanor. Whether it’s the DRLs or the signature headlights of a BMW, headlights say a lot.

Better Light = Greater Safety

Car manufacturers are extremely concerned with the issue of passenger safety, as they should be since the Newtonian laws of physics of large bodies say that collision force equals mass times acceleration. Design rules and guidelines vary widely by country and region.  In the United States, we look to the FMVSS for guidance.  The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) are federal regulations specifying design, construction, performance, and durability requirements for motor vehicles and regulated Automobile safety-related components, systems, and design features.  As much of a mouthful as that is, the standards say surprisingly little about headlights, and most regulations are actually decided at a state level. 

The color of light is more clearly defined than intensity.  Only white and amber light may be visible from the front of a vehicle, and only red and amber may be visible from the back. There are no specific color temperatures or wavelengths called out in federal or state regulations, but most of the standards contain a clause that basically asks the driver or manufacturer to use common sense. 

Why Use LEDs in Automotive Applications?
