With the arrival of a new owner, a number of names have been touted as the next manager of Manchester United, but Simone Inzaghi, who manages Italian Serie A powerhouse Inter Milan, has emerged as a surprise candidate.
"Manchester United are very impressed with what Inzaghi has done at Inter Milan," Tribuna reported on Sunday, citing Italy's Tuttosport.
Currently leading Inter to the top of the league, Inzaghi won the Coppa Italia in 2021 after taking over the reins. The following season, he led the team to the UEFA Champions League final in the 2022-2023 season, where they were equaled by Manchester City. Although they didn't win the title, Inzaghi's performance was a testament to his abilities.
It was a great achievement for Inzaghi to lead Inter to the final, especially considering the club's lack of success in the Champions League prior to his arrival. The Nerazzurri have been on a downward spiral since winning the Champions League with Jose Mourinho in 2010, never making it past the last four. Inzaghi led the team to the final for the first time in 13 years and reestablished their international competitiveness.
Inter have been cruising under Inzaghi this season.
They've already lifted the Supercoppa. In the Champions League, they reached the round of 16 and then faced Atletico Madrid (ATM) in Spain on May 21, winning the first leg 1-0 on home soil. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel, who is set to leave early this summer after a string of disappointing results at Bayern Munich, and current Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann are also among the favorites to take over at United.
