Acid reflux is when the stomach acids creep up the esophagus and cause symptoms like heartburn, chest burn, stomach burn etc. And there are some foods that further aggravate this issue.

Following are some of the foods you should avoid if you are suffering from GERD.

Saturated fat foods

Foods steeped in high saturated fats, deep fried foods, fast foods etc. are some of the biggest culprits of GERD. They increase the risk of you getting acid reflux. It also increases the time for you to digest and empty your stomach.

Some of the examples of food containing unsaturated fat are:

Citrus fruits

Although fruits are harmless and even beneficial for people who are suffering from GERD, certain fruits are full for the citric acid that further aggravates the cause of GERD. Therefore following fruits are something that should be avoided: Oranges, lemons, Pineapples, tomatoes, grapefruits. Other spices like chilies and pepper are also some things that need to completely avoid.


Cocoa contains methylxanthine that is known to loosen and relax the lower esophageal sphincter. Therefore it should be avoided as it can make it easier for stomach acid to reach the esophagus.

Garlic, onions, and spicy foods

Spicy and tangy foods, such as onions and garlic, trigger heartburn symptoms in many people.

These foods won’t trigger reflux for everyone. But if you eat a lot of onions or garlic, make sure to track your meals carefully in your diary. Some of these foods, along with spicy foods, may bother you more than other foods do.


Caffeine is known to trigger the acid reflux. Therefore, all those substances like colas, cold coffees, and other beverages must be avoided.

Other substances:

There are various other foods like onions, garlic and other kinds of spicy foods that can heartburns. Even meat that contains fat like bacon, steak etc. can cause inflammation and heartburns. Mints and chewing gums also contain substances that trigger heartburn.

What the research says?

There is no hard evidence that is attained through clinical testing that most of the foods mentioned do in fact prevent GERD. But, they are known and recorded based on their effects on the patients and how they reduced the symptoms of an acid reflux.

No diet has been proven to prevent GERD. However, certain foods may ease symptoms in some people.

Food like fiber-based products, fruits and vegetables have proven to not be proactive in causing GERD and many people have also reported having no issues when they eat these types of foods.

But, they have known foods that help reduce cholesterol, out of control blood sugar, haemorrhoids and other blood and stomach related issues. These do help in the prevention of the symptoms Causes Of Acid Reflux.
