If you have hundreds or thousands of photos, you can get started with making a time-lapse video. All you need to do is rapidly change from one still image to another to create an illusion of movement. That’s how motion pictures are created by playing back 24 or 30 frames per second.

Before you begin editing, you need to determine how many pictures you want to take based on how long you would like your video to be. A little bit of maths is required while working on a time-lapse so you don’t get disappointed with your end result.

If you want a 20 second long time-lapse, you need to have a minimum of 480 still images. And if you use 30fps, your 20-second video would need 600 still images. So, you can see the enormous number of images you need to make a 20-second video.

Once you have your images ready, you can start creating the time-lapse video sequence. To do so, import your collection of photographs into the video editor of your choice. For this, you can use any open-source software or video editing app on your phone or desktop. Some of the common options include VLC Media Player (Windows/Mac), iMovie (Mac/iPhone), and Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile (Android). There are some advanced video and photo editing tools also like Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro that can be used if you already know a bit about photography.

When the files are ready, you will be able to view them in your video editor. Here you can arrange the pictures the way you like, speed up the video, use color grading, enhance images and also add a soundtrack.

Once you are done and satisfied with the result, save the video. So that’s it. That’s how you create a time-lapse video using still images.
