How to Dress Up a Sweatshirt

How to Dress Up a Sweatshirt

Cold weather has arrived. and the best way to keep warm is to dress in layers. A classic crewneck sweatshirt is comfy and warm but often comes across as too casual when worn alone. And you certainly don't want to wear one with the matching sweatpants.

However, there are many ways you can dress up a sweatshirt to make it work or date ready. In fact, you can use many of these tricks at the same time.

Wear a Blazer Over It

Nothing says polished as effectively as a blazer. Wearing a blazer over your sweatshirt will not only provide another warm but not too thick layer, it will make you look dressed up.

A navy blazer is always classic, but also try a blazer in fun colors or in an unexpected fabric, like denim.

Throw on a Leather Jacket

Nothing says, "I'm dressed up in a totally effortless way" like a leather jacket (or a vegan leather jacket works, too!). Whether it's a classic biker jacket or a bomber jacket, this will let you look pulled together and cool even though you have a warm and fuzzy sweatshirt on.

Add a Scarf

Tie a scarf around your neck in a complementary color or pattern. This will add a pop of interest and draw attention to your face. It also has the added benefit of keeping your neck warm.

Though it's winter, you don't have to use a big bulky scarf. Use one in a light fabric like silk that you can tie right against your skin.

Another easy way to dress up a sweatshirt is to add some fun jewelry. A statement necklace, which is a large necklace that may be shaped like a bib or have one eye-catching stone,  worn over a sweatshirt can add some sparkle.

A pair of large earrings draw the eye toward the face while also making the sweatshirt seem more dressed up. Choose classic gold hoops or some costume jewelry in your favorite style. Some crystal chandelier earrings are an interesting contrast to the casualness of the sweatshirt. Experiment and see what you like. There are no rules.

Wear a Button-up Shirt Underneath

For extra oomph, wear a button-up shirt underneath your sweatshirt. It's especially effective if your button-up shirt has a pattern or contrasting color.

Now you can let the collar pop out, show off the hem of the shirt, or even push up your sleeves and roll the button-up over the sweatshirt. Add a pencil skirt and some heels and you have a sexy daytime look. Add some tailored pants and you have an office-ready ensemble.

Wear a T-shirt in a Contrasting Color Underneath

The fastest and easiest way to make your look pulled together is to wear something tailored on your bottom half. Whether that's a pair of classic khakis or some houndstooth slacks, wearing a nice pair of pants with your crewneck sweatshirt will instantly elevate your look.

Wear Fashionable Jeans

If you're going for a more cool look but don't have to go into an office, consider wearing a pair of your best-fitting jeans. These can be whatever style you like but should fit you well. This is a nice casual weekend look that you can additionally dress up with jewelry or shoes.

Add a Skirt

Feeling more glam? Try wearing a skirt in a shiny fabric on the bottom. This silhouette can be any of your choice, like a pencil skirt or a full skirt. Just go with whatever suits your mood. Make sure the silhouettes are balanced; sometimes longer full skirts look better than shorter full ones.

A leather mini-skirt worn with a sweatshirt makes it look more approachable and cool. Pair this with some boots or flats and you have a glamorous look that can be worn day or night.

Choose Sleek Shoes

If you want to add more to your look, don't reach for your sneakers. Get out a pair of sleeker shoes. Booties are a great choice, in either a low or high heel. Pumps can also work. The idea is that you're contrasting something dressy with something casual and ending up with something cool.

Now there's no need to save your sweatshirt wearing for the weekends only. Using these tips make sweatshirts into the most versatile of sweaters, so make sure you work them into your regular weekday rotation. That they're cozy and warm on top of being stylish is just icing on the cake.
