How Portable Load Banks Ensure Power Supply During Emergencies

Well, before delving the details, you should know load banks are used for testing the power supply at the electrical outputs of a diesel generator, gas turbine and UPS systems during maintenance and commissioning. 

While talking about portable load bank, they can be rented from those who provide generator services, and they are driven to the site using a trailer. Most loadbanks come with incremental switching that let the generator be ramped-up and hence protect the loadbank from “block loading”. 

Portable reactive loadbanks:  Reactive loadbanks are used to simulate systems affected by the power network, electromagnetic devices and electric motor. The required equipment for such power testing system is capacitors, transformers and a motor driven device.  Based on the expected load from the power backup system, loadbanks simulate capacitive or inductive load.

Even if the container loadbank comes large, it is portable.  After reaching the site, the loadbank is unloaded from the truck using struts and telescoping leg extension. 

Go for reactive loadbank rental to perform the loadbank test safely for the generator and other power backup system in the building. The loadbank should be placed parallel with the building. The proper way to connect the loadbank is arranging a dedicated trailer with an over current protection device inside the vehicle, whereas the trailer will be located outside of the generator building. 

In the event, when a portable generator fails during the test or if the generator is identified as faulty one to get any further repair, the loadbank would be loaded back into the bus.  Here is a recommended procedure to conduct the loadbank test-

• Give generator the start and run it until the temperature stabilises.

• Shift all the automatic and manual switches to the emergency source.

• Until the desired load is reached, it is better to step-load the generator.

• Try to remove the loadbank before undertaking any other activity after the testing phase.

• Get all the transfer switches back to the normal position. 

• Go by the manufacturer’s guideline to let the generator cool down.
