Home Cleaning Tasks to Tackle Once a Year

Home Cleaning Tasks to Tackle Once a Year

When you own a home, it can often feel as if you have an endless to do list. Maintaining and cleaning a home properly can seem overwhelming at times. The good news is that there are some cleaning tasks that you need to only do once a year. Many people find Spring to be the perfect time to complete the following home chores.

Window Washing

This means the outside of the windows, not just the insides. Brush the debris and dust from the edges of the glass along the window frames. Then use your favorite glass spray cleaner and wipe them down with a lint free cloth. If you have windows that require a ladder to reach them and don’t want to climb to new heights on your own, you can also hire someone to do this task for you.

Drape and Curtain Cleaning

While you’re cleaning the windows, you may as well clean the drapes and curtains that have been hanging about collecting dust all year long. Take them all down and either wash yourself or send out to the dry cleaners. You can also use a hand held vacuum and simply vacuum them in place.

Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are one of those things that you probably don’t think about too often, if at all. They get clogged up with all kinds of leaves and twigs and debris. When they’re filled with all that stuff, water won’t drain properly. Some homeowners use ladders or climb in their roofs to reach their gutters and scoop out the debris by hand or with a small shovel. For the less adventurous, there are also professionals who offer gutter-cleaning services.

Heating and AC Vents

It’s a good idea to remove the vent covers from your heating and AC units and vacuum or brush all the dust from the slats. Vacuum around the vent openings as well as dust loves to collect there.

Carpet Cleaning

If your house has carpeting, deep clean it once a year. You can rent a deep carpet cleaner from your home improvement store or hire a professional to come and do it for you.

Clean Upholstery

While you’re deep cleaning your carpet, do all your upholstery as well. Though you can certainly do this yourself, many people hire a professional for this task.

Deep Clean Your Dryer

To give your dryer a deep clean, first unplug it, then pull it out from the wall and remove the duct. Vacuum under it, behind it, and as far into the duct as you can. There are also brushes made specifically for this task.

Clean the Fireplace

If your home has a fireplace, use a shop vacuum to clean out the ashes. Wipe down the inside with wet paper towels for an even more intense clean. Sweep the hearth and all surrounding areas as well. For chimney cleaning, a professional is most likely required.

Clean the Garage or Basement

Wherever that place is in your house where you pile and stack and store stuff, it’s a great idea to give it a good organizing/cleaning out once a year. You can also use this time to make sure your mower works properly and to pump up the tires in any bicycles you may not have ridden in awhile. Organize your tools and workbench if you have one so the next time you have a project, it’ll be easier to find everything.

If you garden or plant flower beds, make sure all your rakes, shovels, watering cans, and pots are clean and organized.

Tackling each of these cleaning tasks just once a year makes for a healthy, happy home and keeps everything operating efficiently.
