Making it Easier for the Kids to Move Out

Making it Easier for the Kids to Move Out

Date : 2018-02-27

The time has come. It is about that time for your children to take the next step in their life. It wasn’t easy getting here, but it can be an easy transition into the next chapter of their life, and yours. By planning, you can really make sure your child will not be too stressed out on their own. These can be things such as talking about credit, helping them find a place, hire a moving company, and many more. Here are a few things to touch on to help make this transition easier on everyone.

Help them manage their savings

One of the biggest problems for kids coming to age is not knowing how to spend or save their money correctly. Young adults can be quite eager. Therefore, you should help set them right by managing their savings account. There are different ways to go about this than the traditional methods. For example, having them pay savings rent can boost their confidence in getting their own place while keeping money. Every month, have them pay you however much they might be spending when they move out on rent. This money can go directly into a savings account for them, but it will teach them to be wise with their funds. It will be interesting to see what kind of methods you put into place if they are late on their payment.

Make sure they have a good job

A good job is the backbone to being able to live on your own. This is very important for property owners or banks to view before they allow a young adult in their property. This can also give them great confidence in themselves, actually, it is crucial. Without the confidence, moving may be very hard.

Have them handle their own chores

When living on their own, the young adult will need to know how to clean up after themselves. It might seem like an easy thing to know, but you would be surprised how many late teens do not know how to use a washer or a dryer correctly. Have them complete a checklist every day. Having the habit of staying on top of their work will prove to be very rewarding on their self-esteem. This will keep them from calling you repeatedly for advice on how to use Windex.

It is crucial to know about credit

There are a few golden talks you should have with your child. One of them being the talk about credit. They should understand the importance of credit and how it can affect their ability to move into a house that they love versus being able to move into a house at all. Try getting them a credit card in their name for just gas or necessities. Then they can pay it off at the end of the month. This is a great habit for building credit. Just make sure to monitor it at first. Having all that money to spend can be very tempting for a young adult.

Following these steps should make it easier to not only move out of the house, but to become an independent adult. Good luck on the transition!

4 Ways to Increase Your Home's Curb Appeal

4 Ways to Increase Your Home's Curb Appeal

Date : 2018-03-13

First impressions are everything. From meeting someone new, to having an interview, your initial feeling is crucial. The same goes with buying a new home or even maintaining the home you already have. The inside of a home is important as well, of course, but people often forget about the exterior and what huge impact it can make on others. Especially with Spring just around the corner, it is time to roll up those sleeves and get to work. We compiled a list of 4 ways to increase your curb appeal by maintaining the exterior of your home.

Gutter Cleaning

If you live in an area with lots of trees, this one should be first on the list. Cleaning the gutter at least once a year will dramatically increase the look of your home. Even if you live in a dry area with no trees, the gutters can still collect dust and debris. The best way to go about cleaning your gutters is to start with a long sleeve t-shirt. Chances are, there will be lots of gunk in the gutters as well, so it is best to be fully covered. For the gunk, use a little plastic shovel to help remove it. Before taking out the leaves, place a tarp on the ground that way you do not have to just toss everything on your lawn. Doing that will only create more work for you. After everything is removed, spray the gutters down with a hose. This will help spot any holes in the gutter as well. If you don’t feel comfortable getting on a ladder and cleaning your gutters yourself, hire a gutter cleaning service to tackle the job for you.

Power Washing

Although this is basically a list of chores, this one will probably be the most fun and satisfying to accomplish. You will of course need a pressure washer to do this. It is imperative that you know how to use it before you do anything. Not using a pressure washer properly can result in damage to your home as well as possibly cause a serious injury to yourself – so please be safe! Just like gutter cleaning, it is recommended to wear a long sleeve shirt as well as protective eye wear and boots. Again, if you aren’t the DIY-type, you’ll be safer hiring someone to do the job for you. But if you are, make sure to test the washer on a small part of your home before going at it to make sure it doesn’t take off any paint if you have any. Seeing all the dirt melt off your walls will be satisfying enough to want to do your neighbor’s house.

Windows

Clean and sparkly windows are like a cherry on top when it comes to exterior home maintenance. It really makes all the difference. Ditch the Windex and paper towels, and go for a much more easy and environmentally friendly route. Fill a bucket with hot water and a dash of your favorite detergent solution, and if you don’t already have one, invest in a squeegee and sponge. First, wipe your window down with the detergent-soaked sponge, and use the squeegee to wipe it all away with no streaks. Have a clean, lint-free rag ready to wipe off the excess soap water from the squeegee, and repeat wiping until all the soap is gone. If there are any streaks or water spots, just take a rag to wipe it dry.

Landscape

After getting the gutters, power washing the walls of your house, and making your windows look squeaky clean, the last thing on our list will pull it all together is the landscape. If you have property with grass, it’s important to maintain it. Mow the lawn regularly and trim all your bushes. This will make your property look pretty, refreshing, and most importantly looked-after. If you don’t live in an area with a grassy lawn, chances are you have some type of wildlife to maintain. Pick up any pieces of garbage around your home, and take care of any unsightly weeds. If you have a garden, it is recommended that you check on it at least once a week, and water it accordingly based on what type of flowers or plants that are in it.

Whether you are trying to sell your home or just want to be a good homeowner by taking care of any home exterior needs, these 4 things on our list will definitely get you started in the right direction. The importance of property maintenance outside can often be overlooked, but working for a day or two can completely change the entire look of your home.

Be safe and happy cleaning!

Freshen Up Your Front Porch

Freshen Up Your Front Porch

Date : 2018-03-15

The interior of the home certainly gets the most love, but people often forget the importance of making the front porch look fresh and updated as well. Just a few changes here and there can really make all the difference. Whether it is a pop of color or some newly updated accessories, you can liven up your home and give it a completely different vibe. So, we came up with a list of the essential things to focus on when updating your front porch. Time to roll up those sleeves and get in touch with your creative side.

Power washing

Before doing any decorating, it is important to start with a clean, fresh space to work with. Since many often neglect the outdoor areas like the front and back porch, it is time to wipe those cobwebs away and give everything a good power washing. This will bring life back into your porch by washing away any dust, debris, and dried up mud that may have accumulated over the years. Don’t be surprised if you end up with a completely different color on your floors when you’re finished. If you have a table and chairs out on your porch, give them a quick wash as well. Just be sure to use a hose and a damp rag instead of the pressure washer for the furniture that is not heavy duty.

Paint

A great way to start updating the porch area is to give it a refreshing new paint job. Just like power washing the floors, some fresh paint will make a dramatic change to the entire look of the area.  The most important thing to paint, or repaint, would be the columns or railings that frame the porch. Most people paint them white, however, a warm cream color or a cool grey can set you apart from everyone else and make it look professional. Giving the front door a splash of color is also a great way to spice things up, and it’s much easier than painting the entire outside of your home. A tip for picking out a good color is to follow the color scheme of the entire space. If you are focusing more on cool colors, a navy blue or pastel green would be a nice touch. If you have more warm colors going on, a soft orange or even a vibrant red can transform the porch area entirely. If choosing a color is starting to seem like a difficult decision, stop by to a local hardware store for some advice and inspiration.

Outdoor furniture and decor

Now comes the most fun part – the decorating! Start with updating the outdoor furniture. If you’ve always had chairs on your porch, try putting out a nice couch instead. This will give more opportunities for décor because couches can be accessorized with patterned pillows and plush throw blankets – a perfect addition no matter the time of year. It is best to follow your color scheme, but a good rule for outdoor decorating is to keep things bright and exciting with shades of yellow, red, and green. The ultimate decision, although, is completely up to you and what you prefer. Don’t be afraid to incorporate some cute outdoor accessories to make things more visually appealing. Things like candles, doormats, little statues, and table art add dimension and style.

Plants

Plants are such a great way to add more life and color to any space, indoor or outdoor. Setting up some potted flowers along the edge of the porch is fairly easy and will make your home feel warm and welcoming. The best part about adding plants and flowers to any area is that it’s hard to go wrong. No matter where you put them, they will flourish. As an added tip, try getting a variety of flowers that bloom at different times so that there are always some flowers out. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can even decorate the pots!

Here are the few tips you can follow to make sure that updating your front porch will turn out a success. Just remember, it doesn’t happen overnight. Updating a patio can be a pretty big project, so don’t forget to have patience and to enjoy the work in progress. In the end, you will have a beautiful porch that both you and your neighbors won’t stop admiring. Have fun and good luck!

What you Kondo with Your Unwanted Stuff

What you Kondo with Your Unwanted Stuff

Date : 2019-04-01

Japanese organization consultant Marie Kondo has launched a clean-house revolution with her inspiring “KonMari” organization method. Kondo’s “KonMari” method preaches the ethos that you should eliminate clutter from your life by only holding onto items that “spark joy.” In the Netflix series, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” audiences saw homeowners purge their clutter and simplify their lives with Kondo’s help. Obviously, a tidy and clean home is also a relaxing one, but a stack of garbage bags and pins piled high with items that did not “spark joy” doesn’t exactly feel “tidy.” Now that you’ve cleaned house and eliminated all your clutter, what do you do with the items you’ve purged?

Call a waste pickup service
Depending on how much you’ve decided to throw away, you might not be able to fit it all in your trash bins. If you have a dumpsters worth of trash but no dumpster to use, you might need to call a junk pick-up company

If you’re tossing out one or two large items like a sofa or mattress, you can schedule a free pickup from the city, though there is often a maximum number of times per year that you can use this free service.

You can also drive your waste down to the nearest landfill, though make sure to check beforehand for their list of banned items, which is usually items like computers, paint, or cleaning supplies.

Donate your gently used items
If your clothes, toys, books, and household items are in decent condition, the best thing you can do for your community is to donate them. Donations count as a tax write-off, so it’s a win/win for everybody.

Goodwill and Salvation Army have many locations all over the country and convenient drop-off procedures for all sorts of goods. You can also call your local library to see if they are in need of any book donations. For tech donations and appliances, you can ask local schools or after-school programs if they are in need of things like laptops, e-readers, or tablets. For toys, call children’s hospitals, daycare centers, and children’s shelters to see if they are in need of anything. If you have a lot of clothes, especially unisex items like socks, shirts, and blankets — consider donating your stuff directly to a homeless shelter. However, you should always call your local homeless shelter first to ask what they need before you stop by with garbage bags full of clothes. You can even call your local animal shelter as they might have a use for bed linens and towels.

If you have business outfits that are in good condition, you can donate women’s clothes to Dress for Success, men’s clothes to Career Gear, or google your city and state and “career clothing donation” to find an organization near you.

When donating clothing anywhere, it’s always nice to wash your clothes before you do as many local organizations do not launder clothes before selling or handing them out. Same goes for kitchen appliances — always clean your pots and pans before you donate.

Sell your stuff
After a giant KonMari-style purging party, a garage sale is always a good idea. However, if you live in an apartment or don’t feel like you have enough stuff to merit a full garage sale, try selling your clothing at a nearby consignment or used clothing store.

If there are no resale shops in your area, you can send your clothes to ThredUp, which is an online consignment shop. You can also try selling your used clothing on Poshmark which allows you to control and set your own prices — it’s actually quite like a virtual garage sale.

For books, electronic, and video games, Amazon has a great trade-in program. BookScounter.com is another great online resource for selling your books, especially college textbooks. You can also call your local used bookstores and ask when they buy used books and DVDs.

Recycle your textiles and clothes
It’s easy to recycle your paper and plastic goods as you normally do, but unfortunately, you can’t drop your clothes and other textiles in the blue recycling bins. Instead of adding more junk to the landfill, recycle all the clothes you can’t donate or sell to an organization that converts unwearable textiles into other products.

You can bring a bag of recyclable textiles to any H&M store, send them off to Terracycle, or check out Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles online to find a drop-off or textile recycle location nearest you.

Re-home your old items
This is similar to donating, but on a more personal level. That blender you never use may not spark joy for you, but it might to your little sister who just got her first apartment. Those clothes you meant to take to Goodwill might look amazing on your friend who just got a new job. You never want to unload your junk onto your loved-ones, but if some of your clutter is high-quality, it might spark joy for someone else.

There is no greater feeling than waking up in a house free from clutter, but if you let your post-KonMari purge items collect dust for too long, you’ll have to start the process all over again. Donate, recycle, or simply dump, but no matter what you do, just make sure to make Marie Kondo proud.

Moving Into Your First Rental Home? What You Need to Know

Moving Into Your First Rental Home? What You Need to Know

Date : 2019-04-01

You’ve found the perfect home to rent. Congratulations! But before you sign your lease, there are some things you need to know that you may not have thought of before. Buckle up, because it's time to do some adulting!

Ask Questions
There are some basic questions you need to ask your landlord.
What’s the rent? When is the rent due? Is there a grace period? How is payment accepted?
These may seem obvious, but what if the rent's going to be due on the 1st of the month, but you don’t get paid until the 5th? You’ll want to change that on the lease.
When can rent increases happen and how much will they be?

Some cities or states have rent limits—for instance, they may only be able to increase rent by 5% a year. Others have no rent limits at all, meaning the landlord might decide to double your rent after your lease runs out. Don’t make any assumptions. Look up what the laws are where you live.

Read the Lease
You’ll want to go over the lease before you sign to make sure you know what will happen in these different situations. Tenant/landlord rights vary by state.
Are you allowed guests and how long are they allowed to stay? Having your parents over for a few days probably isn’t going to be a problem. But if your roommate’s boyfriend spends
Can you sublet? Sometimes people want to use their place as an AirBnB while they’re gone for short periods. Others may decide they have to move out and sublet instead of breaking the lease.
Can you break the lease? Under what conditions may you break the lease? And what will you have to pay?
What will happen if the landlord wants to sell it? Most of the time, the landlord will not be able to make you move out before the end of your lease if they decide to sell a property.

Deposits
Deposits should be spelled out in your lease, including how long it will take and the procedure for getting it back after you move out. A deposit could be as high as 3X your month’s rent, depending on the state and whether it’s furnished. Usually it’s 2X the month’s rent, also called first and last month’s rent. If this amount of money is too high for you and you seem like a good renter, your landlord may agree to just take last month’s rent.

Pet Deposits
In the lease it should say whether or not pets are allowed. If they are, then there may be a pet deposit.

Even if they are not allowed, you can still ask the landlord if you are allowed an exception—many times they might put that into the rental agreement to discourage irresponsible pet owners.

When You’re Ready to Move
Call your utility companies and cable companies and arrange to have that switched over-- they may be booked up in advance.

Find a moving company. Many people depend on the kindness of friends and family to help them move, but there are really good reasons to use a moving company.

They can provide you with:
Time-saving packing
Flexibility. If your plans change and there’s a gap between housing, they can get you a storage facility.
Care of items. Big furniture pieces are wrapped in heavy cloth and plastic so your floors and walls won’t get damaged. Fragile items are efficiently wrapped and packed.
Professional insurance. If something breaks, it will be covered.
The correct equipment. If you rent a truck, you still won’t have the kinds of dollies and hoisting straps you need to make the move safely and efficiently. Moving heavy furniture is very hard work, and you don’t want your family and friends getting hurt—which may then mean a claim against your insurance.

Take Photos
Once you get your keys, the first thing you want to do is walk through the house and check on the condition of everything using a list.

In addition, take photos of:
The outside.
Any wall damage or nail holes.
The flooring.
The windows: open, closed, and with blinds up and down.
Appliances, particularly the fridge and oven. Make sure to open the doors and take pictures inside, too.
The basement and/or attic.

Store these photos in someplace readily accessible, like cloud storage.

Knowledge is power, and the more you know about your rights as a tenant, the more confident you\'ll feel about taking on this new role.

4 Tips for Creating a Shabby & Chic Living Room

Date : 2019-04-03

Even if you’ve never heard the phrase “Shabby Chic”, you are likely familiar with this design style. Over the past two decades, many homes, restaurants, and other businesses have embraced this decorating aesthetic. Traditional shabby chic design features a mix of antique furniture, soft fabrics, and light color tones, resulting in a space that is both beautiful and comfortable.

If you are looking to give your home a shabby chic makeover, there are some simple tricks that will help you achieve this look. Keep reading for tips on how to create a shabby & chic living room.

4 Tips for Creating a Shabby Chic Living Room

1. Paint and distress old furniture
One of the key elements to the shabby chic design style is distressed furniture. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny.

Instead of purchasing furniture that has already been painted and distressed, give some of your current furniture a makeover. If you are looking to buy new furniture, scour flea markets, donation centers, and garage sales for inexpensive items that could be brought back to life.

To begin this project, you must first choose a paint color. White furniture always fits in to the shabby chic aesthetic, although you can also select accent colors like turquoise, light pink, gray, and shades of green.

Once you’ve selected your preferred color scheme, look online for tutorials on how to properly paint furniture, including what type of paint you should purchase based on the items you plan to refurbish. When the paint has dried, use sandpaper along the edges of top, drawers, cabinets, etc. This will give the piece a worn-in look.

2. Choose a neutral or pastel wall color
Traditional shabby chic design uses a light, soft color scheme. When choosing your wall color, it’s important to keep this in mind. First, assess the furniture and fabrics that will occupy the room, then select a tone that will complement these belongings. An easy way to do this is to select a color that is featured in the area rug, curtains, or pillows.

Many shabby chic living rooms are painted in a warm white, beige, or gray. These neutral walls fade into the background and allow the items in the room to shine. If you want to be more adventurous with the color on your walls, opt for a soothing eggshell blue, sage green, pale pink, or lilac purple.

3. Introduce upholstery and other fabrics
One thing all shabby chic spaces have in common is that they incorporate a variety of fabrics. Create a space that is comfortable and inviting by covering your existing couch with a slipcover or purchase an overstuffed couch in a neutral color.

Along with an upholstered couch, accent the room with other fabrics in traditional patterns and light colors. Mix and match pillows and dress the windows in floor-length curtains. Drape a quilted blanket over the back of the couch or place it in a wicker basket beside an armchair.

4. Accessorize
Shabby chic design uses accessories to make the space feel inviting and lived-in. To achieve this look, collect antiques, books, and other cottage-y knick knacks. Infuse your space with personal touches by introducing items like candles, vases with dried flowers, pictures in wooden frames, and keepsake boxes.

Final Thoughts
Above all, remember that shabby chic design can take time to achieve. Make a habit of visiting antique shops, second hand stores, and estate sales as you hunt for the perfect items. From weathered furniture to tarnished brass animal figurines, any items with an aged appearance are bound to complement this design style. Be patient as you shop and you will surely create a beautiful shabby & chic living room full of things you cherish.

Home Cleaning Tasks to Tackle Once a Year

Home Cleaning Tasks to Tackle Once a Year

Date : 2019-04-03

When you own a home, it can often feel as if you have an endless to do list. Maintaining and cleaning a home properly can seem overwhelming at times. The good news is that there are some cleaning tasks that you need to only do once a year. Many people find Spring to be the perfect time to complete the following home chores.

Window Washing

This means the outside of the windows, not just the insides. Brush the debris and dust from the edges of the glass along the window frames. Then use your favorite glass spray cleaner and wipe them down with a lint free cloth. If you have windows that require a ladder to reach them and don’t want to climb to new heights on your own, you can also hire someone to do this task for you.

Drape and Curtain Cleaning

While you’re cleaning the windows, you may as well clean the drapes and curtains that have been hanging about collecting dust all year long. Take them all down and either wash yourself or send out to the dry cleaners. You can also use a hand held vacuum and simply vacuum them in place.

Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are one of those things that you probably don’t think about too often, if at all. They get clogged up with all kinds of leaves and twigs and debris. When they’re filled with all that stuff, water won’t drain properly. Some homeowners use ladders or climb in their roofs to reach their gutters and scoop out the debris by hand or with a small shovel. For the less adventurous, there are also professionals who offer gutter-cleaning services.

Heating and AC Vents

It’s a good idea to remove the vent covers from your heating and AC units and vacuum or brush all the dust from the slats. Vacuum around the vent openings as well as dust loves to collect there.

Carpet Cleaning

If your house has carpeting, deep clean it once a year. You can rent a deep carpet cleaner from your home improvement store or hire a professional to come and do it for you.

Clean Upholstery

While you’re deep cleaning your carpet, do all your upholstery as well. Though you can certainly do this yourself, many people hire a professional for this task.

Deep Clean Your Dryer

To give your dryer a deep clean, first unplug it, then pull it out from the wall and remove the duct. Vacuum under it, behind it, and as far into the duct as you can. There are also brushes made specifically for this task.

Clean the Fireplace

If your home has a fireplace, use a shop vacuum to clean out the ashes. Wipe down the inside with wet paper towels for an even more intense clean. Sweep the hearth and all surrounding areas as well. For chimney cleaning, a professional is most likely required.

Clean the Garage or Basement

Wherever that place is in your house where you pile and stack and store stuff, it’s a great idea to give it a good organizing/cleaning out once a year. You can also use this time to make sure your mower works properly and to pump up the tires in any bicycles you may not have ridden in awhile. Organize your tools and workbench if you have one so the next time you have a project, it’ll be easier to find everything.

If you garden or plant flower beds, make sure all your rakes, shovels, watering cans, and pots are clean and organized.

Tackling each of these cleaning tasks just once a year makes for a healthy, happy home and keeps everything operating efficiently.
